As we continue our exploration of things to do in the wonderful Newhall community. We wanted to feature a not-so-hidden gem, William S. Hart Regional Park and Museum. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a fun day out, this historic 265-acre ranch has something for everyone.

The property was once owned by William S. Hart, an iconic silent film star and renowned cowboy of the silver screen. Hart had a deep passion for the Old West. He purchased the land in 1921, and eventually established a trust fund managed by the County of Los Angeles for the maintenance of the park, his house and its contents (now a museum) for use by the public. The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Hart’s life, showcasing his collecting of Western Art, Native American artifacts and film memorabilia. While the tours of the museum are temporarily closed to the public due to efforts to transfer the trust of the property from Los Angeles County to the City of Santa Clarita, the public grounds and outside of the museum are still open to the public.

For those wanting to take a hike to enjoy the landscaping and breathtaking views around the property, you can jump on one of many of the hiking trails on the property. Most of the trails are fairly shaded and not too steep. They offer some amazing views of the Santa Clarita Valley and Santa Susana Mountains. There is plenty of wildlife to be observed and if you’re paying attention, you may just catch a glimpse of the Bison herd that lives on the property. The descendants of the American Bison that were donated to Hart and have lived on the property since the 1960’s.

The Bison are not the only animals kept and cared for on the property. Located near the parking area there are over 50 animals kept for viewing in the “barnyard”, including, pigs, emus, llamas, alpacas, turtles, chickens, mules, horses, geese, ducks and rabbits. You can even attend a free barnyard tour that is offered on Saturdays at 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM. This is a great way to entertain the kids or grandkids, even if you have just a few minutes to spare. The barnyard is open from 9-2 every day the park is open.

Many other facilities are located on the property including a gift shop that sells copies of Hart’s silent films, a banquet hall, numerous picnic areas with barbecues and picnic tables, bathrooms and classrooms. If you happen to hop over to the Heritage Junction that houses the Santa Clarita Historical Society on the south side of the entrance, you can view numerous historic buildings that have been relocated to the area, including the Saugus Train Station and a locomotive and caboose that was donated to the City by another great western star, Gene Autry. A Historical Society Museum is located inside the train station, however, it is temporarily closed for refurbishment.

William S. Hart Park is more than just a park; with its history, beautiful trails, picnic areas and barnyard animals, this Newhall park is a great way to spend a few hours or a whole day. Check the website https://hartmuseum.org/ for the most up to date information regarding the museum opening before your visit.
