Pumpkin carving is one of our most favorite fall traditions. Johnathan and the kids will spend hours carving these elaborate scary and sometimes funny faces in pumpkins. Nothing is more disappointing than after making a masterpiece than seeing your masterpiece shrivel up or grow mold just a few days later. The good news is that with a few easy tricks, you can keep your pumpkin carvings looking fresh and spooky all season long! Here’s how:

1. Choose the Right Pumpkin

Start with a healthy, firm pumpkin. Make sure there are no soft spots, cuts, or blemishes on the surface. Pumpkins that are damaged will break down more quickly, so take your time picking the perfect one.

2. Clean the Inside Thoroughly

After you’ve carved your pumpkin, make sure to scoop out all the seeds and pulp. Use a spoon or an ice cream scoop to scrape the walls as clean as possible. The less moisture and organic material left inside, the longer it will stay fresh.

3. Soak in a Bleach Bath

This step is a game-changer! Mix about one tablespoon of bleach with one gallon of water and soak your pumpkin in the solution for 20 minutes. This will kill bacteria and mold spores that could lead to rotting. After soaking, dry the pumpkin thoroughly.

4. Apply Petroleum Jelly or Vegetable Oil

Coating the carved areas and the inside of your pumpkin with petroleum jelly or vegetable oil helps to seal in moisture and slow down the drying process. It also creates a barrier to prevent bacteria and mold growth. Reapply every few days to keep your pumpkin hydrated.

5. Keep it Cool (But Not Freezing!)

Pumpkins decay faster in warm temperatures, so keep your carved masterpiece in a cool, shaded spot. You can even store it in the refrigerator overnight if you’re not displaying it. Just be careful not to expose it to freezing temperatures, as that will cause it to soften and collapse.

Bonus Tip: Use a Pumpkin Preserving Spray

There are several commercial pumpkin preservation sprays available that can extend the life of your pumpkin. These sprays create a protective coating that prevents mold and dehydration. You can also DIY by mixing one part vinegar with ten parts water and spraying your pumpkin daily.

With just a little extra care, your pumpkin carvings can last up to two weeks or more! Try these tips this fall and keep your spooky decorations looking fresh and festive all season long.
