New Trash Cans, Increasing Trash Fees, Mandatory Food Scraps Recycling...What you need to know about the July 1st Trash Hauler Transition
The only time I really stress about trash is when I am pondering if that big Amazon box will fit in the recycling bin, or at 2 a.m. the morning of our scheduled pick-up day when I realize I forgot to wheel the bins to the curb. That was until I started hearing bits and pieces about new legislation being passed in California requiring food scraps to be composted, then about us having a new trash hauler with new bins, new fees and new protocols.
After just a little bit of looking, I have found a great website that explains all the details, not just about the new hauler (Burrtec is in, Waste Management is out), and all the dirty details (ha!) about our new trash cans, how to order more or a different size and when to expect a new bill from the new hauler.
What I found truly helpful was the information regarding the food composting and how to do it properly. It turns out what I know about composting at home is completely different from what they can compost commercially. They can now take basically all food waste including meat, cheese, milk, and even food soiled paper. For pick-up, the haulers are using the green waste bins to take the food waste away…but you can’t just throw it in the green bin mixed in with the yard trimmings. (Was I the only one starting to contemplate the horrific smell that would come from the green waste bin?) Under the new protocol the green waste must be bagged and sealed up in plastic, and it will be sorted and bags removed later for processing.
The link below you'll find a helpful video series which includes a few of the videos above, a quick FAQ sheet, and you will be able to find more information about what's changing and included with the new service from Burrtec. This includes everything about state mandated organics recycling, carpet recycling, food waste pails, composting kits, bulky cardboard collection, document shredding events and a local customer service center to effectively handle local calls.
